Shenanigans IV: Indistinguishable From Magic
Greetings, friends!
It’s been a while since I’ve sent out a newsletter, I know. I have this strange internal debate that occurs whenever I think I have something worthy of newsletter-ing, where I ultimately decide I should just post it on social media and save this space for things that are Important in some indefinable way. Thankfully, I have some news that is unequivocally big to share!
News!
Chilling Effect was shortlisted for the Arthur C. Clarke Award! I’m extremely honored, and quite intimidated by the talent of the other nominees. I also may have shouted “Big news from London!” at my husband, because I’m a giant nerd and I really love Disney’s Sword in the Stone. Results are set to be announced in mid-September, so until then we can all be in suspense together. Nail status: bitten.
I also turned in my third book, currently titled Fault Tolerance, to my lovely editors at Harper Voyager. Pre-order links are not yet available, but as soon as they are, I’ll be plastering them on every available surface, including my forehead. I’m so excited for everyone to read the final misadventures of Eva Innocente and the rest of the crew of La Sirena Negra, even though I’m also sad to be moving on from them. And if you haven’t bought Prime Deceptions yet, the ebook is on sale for a hot minute.
Events!
On Thursday, July 29th at 6pm MT, Old Firehouse Books is hosting a book launch for KB Wagers, whose second NeoG book Hold Fast Through the Fire is available for pre-order now! I’ll be there, along with Mike Chen (We Could Be Heroes) and Jackson Ford (Random Sh*t Flying Through the Air), talking about sci-fi adventures, funny stuff and probably Mass Effect. The event will be streaming to the Old Firehouse Books Facebook page, and is free.
Speaking of Mass Effect (which I often do), did you know: every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night at 9pm ET on my Twitch channel, I play a video game for fun! Right now, I’m embroiled in the first Mass Effect game, and I’m just about to start Horizon: Zero Dawn, for which I am extremely hyped. Come chat with me and make fun of my Mako driving!
Our Blades in the Dark campaign, “The Case of the Cindered Seal,” is still ongoing, hosted by the fine folks at Speculate 2.0. The Strange Friends continue to fight the power in Duskwall, which at present involves busting into warehouses owned by corrupt nobles. Our next episode will be July 25th at 7pm EST on the usual Twitch channel.
Cool Stuff!
If you missed me at Flights of Foundry, I was lucky enough to be in a lot of really cool panels. But I wasn’t the only one! And Dream Foundry, the folks who run the convention, are releasing videos of the various awesome discussions and interviews and whatnot on their YouTube channel. Check out the stuff they’ve posted so far, including a panel I moderated called “The Clockwork of Mechanised Emotions in Games,” featuring Phoebe Barton and Allie Bustion.
Cats!
As I mentioned in my last newsletter, when I take my laptop to the couch, my cats immediately cluster around me for snugs. Unfortunately, they continue to believe the most effective snug method involves throwing themselves across my arms so I can’t, you know… type.
And now, we have reached the end of cake. And by cake, I mean this newsletter. If you have any questions you'd like me to answer in a blog post or here in the newsletter, you can leave a comment on the Substack page, email me, or find me on Twitter or Facebook or Instagram. Stay safe, and thanks for joining in the shenanigans!
